  • Distinguished Service Award, for significant research, writing, and professional service in marital and family therapy, presented by the Minnesota Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (MAMFT), 2001.
  • Certificate of Appreciation, Minnesota Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, “for devoted service on the Board of Directors,” 1998.
  • Certificate of Appreciation, Program in Human Sexuality, Department of Family Practice & Community Health, University of Minnesota Medical School,  for “twelve years of outstanding professional service...  and exceptional contributions,” 1995.
  • Recipient of  an “Outstanding Contribution” Award  by Minnesota Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (MAMFT) for an outstanding article published in the MAMFT Journal during 1995 --  Metz, Michael E.,   “Results from empirical studies of couples conflict resolution.”
  • Created and developed a significant psychological test, The Styles of Conflict Inventory (SCI), which measures intimate couple conflict dynamics, published by a major national testing company (Consulting Psychologists Press, Palo Alto, CA); 1993.
  • Certificate of Honor, "In appreciation for many years of dedicated and distinguished service for the organization," from the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex (SSSS), 1992 SSSS Annual Meeting, San Diego, California, 1992.

  • Appointed by Governor Rudy Perpich as a Founding Member on the Minnesota State Board of Marriage and Family Therapists (examiners for state licensure), 1987 - 1991.
  • As co-chair of the legislative advocacy team succeeding in obtaining MFT regulation/licensure, recipient of  the Rosemary Dumer Award, for outstanding contribution to the field of marital and family therapy, Minnesota Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (MAMFT), 1988.
  • "Appreciation Award," Alternative Family Lifestyles Committee, St. Paul, Minnesota, 1985.
  • Ph.D. dissertation nominated for the National Research Award, Kinsey Institute, and designated "Honorable Mention," 1984.
